About Paphos

Paphos (Pafos) is on the western coast of Cyprus and site of the island's second international airport. The resort town has as its focal point a charming fishing harbour by Paphos Fort, with open-air cafes and tavernas.

Paphos is also widely known as the legendary birthplace of Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty.
Modern-day Paphos is split in two, with the upper section up the hill (Pano Paphos, known locally as Ktima) the town center and lower Kato Paphos near the sea front, harbour, hotels and restaurants.
Paphos has a large choice of international dining and modern coffee bar restaurants.

Coral Bay is further along the coast along the Tombs of the Kings road is a beautiful place to stay or explore. There are many shops, restaurants and a lovely beach.  This is a good base if you wish to travel inland to visit some of the many villages.

Weather
We have over 300 days a year of sunshine in Cyprus and it does get hot and humid in summer
(32 + deg C and 90% Humidity) between mid June through to mid September. The rest of the year is mild, but colder in January & February particularly in the evenings.

Explore
If you want to explore Paphos, then hiring a car is the best way to get about to the traditional Cypriot villages and experience a delicious home cooked meal, chat to the locals and experience the `real’ Cyprus.

So escape to the hills for the day - you will not believe how different it is!

Around 30 – 45 mins from Coral Bay is the lovely town of Polis and Latchi harbour which are both well worth a visit by car.  On the way call at the traditional Cypriot village of Kathikas where there are many local tavernas and Sterna Winery is well worth a stop to sample some local wines.

A must see is Aphrodite’s Rock which is a short drive along the coast road (around 20/25 mins from Paphos. The Petra Tou Romiou (Rock of the Greek), or the Rock Of Aphrodite is a popular tourist spot for its breathtaking view of the sea and more famously the birth place of Aphrodite.  Legend has it that this is the Rock from which Aphrodite mythically arose from the sea. This is a stunning location and you musn’t forget to take your camera along. Further along the coast from Aphrodite’s Rock (9km) is the beautiful village of Pissouri.

Shopping

There are several large supermarkets in Paphos, Papantonia (Kato Paphos, Chorakas, Paphos Town and Polis), Carrefour, E & S, & Orphanides which sell many products familiar to the UK.  There are lots of pharmacies, kiosks (mini supermarkets) and bakeries around the town.  Banks are open in the morning usually until around 1pm.  For familiar clothing stores we have two Debenhams stores, two Next, Marks & Spencer, Dorothy Perkins, Mango,  Zara and shoestore Charles & Keith.

If you have hired a car and need some retail therapy there is a new mall called the `MY MALL'. which opened in 2009 (previously named as Tiffany Mall)   It is around 50 mins drive from Paphos just outside Limassol.  There will be 150 shops with 17 restaurants expected when all units are open. This will be the largest Mall of its kind in Cyprus.

Pano Paphos (upper Paphos) is full of modern shops and is located inland from Kato Paphos which is on the coast.  If you are holidaying in Kato Paphos a visit to Pano Paphos is a must and something you should definitely not miss There are many places you can enjoy a relaxing meal. The daily market is well worth visiting where you will find local goods including leather and lace.

Additional Information

If you are British you will find you should feel very at home in Cyprus. We drive on the left and you will find road signs are in English as well as Greek Cypriot.  The motorways (2 lane) are very quiet compared to the UK and very scenic too.   English is widely spoken here, and English newspapers/magazines are widely available too.
